August
Photo Contest Winners
Bruce
Keller quickly named the location of the beautiful
waterfall in our August
edition.
With probably close to 100 trips down the Colorado River through
the Grand Canyon to his credit, Bruce's precise answer was: "It
is of course Deer Creek Falls in Grand Canyon at 136 mile on the
river from Lee's Ferry."
Congratulations also must go to Alison Campbell who
speaks for the generalists among us when she wrote in, "That looks
like Deer Creek in Grand Canyon !" Thanks for playing, guys. Where Was This Photo Taken?

We thought this month's photo quiz would be a total give-away… think
you recognize this famous mountain? Send your guess to info@xolaconsulting.com.
The first person to answer correctly will receive a lovely little
prize from the Healthy Back Company and credit in our next edition!

What in the world is "agritourism?" Whenever a working agricultural
businesses – think farms, wineries, orchards – open themselves up
to visitors, we can call it agritourism. Learn how Crete's Culinary
Sanctuaries has developed this concept in Greece and you'll see
there's a lot more to agritourism than winery tours, however!

We met entrepreneur Nikki Rose, founder of Crete
's Culinary Sanctuaries through our friends
at Voluntourism.org.
With an exotic blend of outdoor activity and delicious food she
describes as "eco-agritourism," Nikki's
program was recognized in 2005 by National
Geographic Adventure and the Wall
Street Journal.
Nikki herself is a Greek-American professional chef and writer,
and founded Crete's Culinary Sanctuaries to help preserve cultural
and culinary traditions and promote sustainable organic agriculture
and tourism in Greece.
Join Nikki on one of her 7-day "Hiking,
Caving and Eating" trips and she'll keep you
fit exploring of one or two of the island's 3000 caves and
hiking along the stunning coast of Preveli and the Samaria
Gorge. At night you'll stay on beautiful traditional properties
on organic farms. One night has the group nestled in the mountain
village of Axos -
in the shoulder of the commanding Mount
Psiloritis - sleeping in traditionally built cottages
surrounded by vineyards and gardens.
And of course the food: You will learn about how some of Crete's
culinary delicacies are produced and enjoy the cuisine and company
of village locals who are famous for fantastic lamb and grilling
techniques, a vast array of cheeses, high quality organic olive
oil, honey and wine.
Nikki says, "people should know we will be spending time with
locals...on their farms, in their kitchens and also dining with
them...and they are not just serving us. It's a true
culture immersion experience, be prepared!"
For more information on this itinerary and others, see the schedule on
the website, or email Nikki directly at info@cookingincrete.com.

We've known Andy and Katy at Northwest
Voyageurs for years, and were excited to see the addition
of a sea kayaking adventure in their catalog. Join their
Baja sea kayak trip this November for a classic adventure – camping
on white sand beaches and paddling along Baja's rugged
coastline in the Sea of Cortez.
Separating the Baja
California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland, the
Sea of Cortez provides a beautiful playground for
paddlers. Take some time in the water there and there's
a good chance you'll be rewarded: odds are good you'll
see humpback whales, manta rays and Leatherback Sea
Turtles. For more information, call 800-727-9977.

Another note for all our adventure travel business
and media readers – don't forget to check out the Adventure
Travel Trade Association's World Summit October
19-21 in a classic adventure travel destination - rugged
Seattle, WA. This year's summit brings together the
best adventure travel operators and national tourism
leaders from around the world for networking and information
sessions. It's a great opportunity for small operators
to network, learn more about emerging industry trends
and how to take advantage of them to improve your business. |
