July
Photo Contest
Well, the picture we ran in our July
issue had you all stumped. Many of you guessed Argentina,
and we don't blame you - those jagged peaks do resemble mountains
Los Glaciares National Park. BUT, these crags can be found in
the U.S. - the picture featured the Whitney Cirque, taken on Mt.
Whitney in California, the tallest mountain in the lower
48 states. Thanks again to Eythan Sontag for sharing his great
picture.
Where Was This Photo Taken?

Perhaps this month's shot will be a little easier
than last month - if you think you recognize the place, send your
guess to info@xolaconsulting.com.

We've dedicated this issue to VolunTourism and adventure travel. Read
further to learn more about how the adventure travel industry has
started promoting voluntourism, and find out about a great adventure/volunteer
trip in Cambodia.

While the concept of combining travel with volunteer service is nothing
new, a popular notion of "VolunTourism," currently gaining broad
appeal with people who might not typically think of themselves as volunteers,
is something of a new phenomenon. We're seeing a growing array of adventure
travel companies responding to this traveler interest by bringing voluntourism
into their itineraries.
We've highlighted one adventure travel
company using voluntourism in its offering in Cambodia
in this issue. Visit
Xola's website for information on adventure travel and
voluntourism; see VolunTourism.org for
general information on voluntourism and a growing list
of operators from a range of tourism niches.

"Adventurous Living, Responsible Giving," is the motto PEPY
Ride founders Daniela Papi and Greta Arnquist chose for
their organization, a non-profit with a growing offering of
adventure travel cycle tours through Cambodia. This energetic,
ambitious organization helped build the PEPY Ride School in
Siem Reap in 2005 and now continues to revisit the school's
students on its cycle tours.
From November 18-26, they'll travel
from Siem
Reap, home of UNESCO
World Heritage Site Angkor Wat, to Phnom
Penh riding primarily on unpaved village roads.
Beginning at the PEPY Ride School, the
group delivers supplies to new first year students.
On another day they stop at a rural school to give an "environmental
lesson," and conclude in Phnom Penh with a visit
to a Cambodia Children's Fund orphanage. Cyclists
age 25-60+ have enjoyed these trips at a wonderful price
- $700 covers trip expenses; an additional $500 goes
directly to the aid program.

Ride - http://www.pepyride.org or

This is a note for all our adventure travel business and media readers
- don't forget to check out the Adventure
Travel Trade Association's World Summit October 19-21 in a classic
adventure travel destination - rugged Seattle, WA. This year's summit
brings together the best adventure travel operators and national tourism
leaders from around the world for networking and information sessions.
It's a great opportunity for small operators to network, learn more
about emerging industry trends and how they may affect your business.
