Adventure Tourism Product Development Guidelines
Heli-skiing
Heli-Skiing
Product Description

Adventure tourism focused on a helicopter ski/snowboard adventure in mountainous environments worldwide for intermediate to advanced snowsports riders. Heli Skiing is downhill skiing accessed by helicopter, allowing skiiers and snowboarders to reach remote locations of natural beauty and challenging slopes. The helicopter picks up and drops off skiiers throughout the day.

Basic Trip Structure
Helicopter ski tours can either be day trips or multiday/week long vacations. Operators will need access to a broad range of terrain in an expansive mountain environment which enjoys frequent falls of fresh snow as well as clear sky days. It is preferable to be in a location with relatively stable snowpack.

Requirements
bulletAn outfitter should be able to offer packages that allow skiers and snowboarders to ride 7000 meters of vertical descent.

bulletProximity to mountains as well as a minimum of 2 star accommodation allows outfitter to provide comfortable lodging and food to an upscale and sophisticated clientele.

bulletMountainous locations will need to offer both top and bottom landings where the helicopter can idle to allow safe egress to the skiing.

bulletAreas accessed for skiing or snowboarding should be relatively inaccessible by other means, i.e. lift service.

bulletGuides and pilots should be experienced in evaluating snow conditions and trained in safety.

bulletAlternate activities are needed when flying or skiing is not available to weather or snow conditions.

Marketing Recommendations
Efforts should be made to determine ability levels and comfort levels desired from each niche of this market. Generally, younger "extreme skiers" need fewer comforts and cheaper accommodation and are seeking more challenges with steeper terrain. However, a larger portion of the market, those in the baby-boomer demographic, are seeking less challenging terrain with more higher levels of comfort after their day on the mountain. Operators should advertise on ski blogs and specialty print magazines.
